What Can Cosmetic Dentistry Improve?

Cosmetic dentistry procedures can improve nearly any aesthetic aspect of the teeth, gums and smile, including the following:

  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Extremely worn teeth
  • Small spaces between the teeth
  • Minor chips or cracks in the teeth
  • Abnormally shaped or sized teeth
  • Excessive gum tissue

The cosmetic dentistry intervention recommended for you will be based on your specific concerns and goals. Dr. Añonuevo will examine your mouth during a consultation and ask you questions about the aspects of your smile that bother you. He will also inquire about your desired cosmetic outcomes.

Dr. Añonuevo will recommend the intervention or interventions most likely to provide the results you desire. Together, the two of you will decide on an appropriate course of action. Your cosmetic dentistry intervention may require a single visit or multiple visits spaced out over the course of a few months.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a quick and cost-effective intervention to improve the appearance of imperfect teeth. It can be used to hide small gaps between the teeth, as well as chips, cracks, stains or discoloration. The bonding process can be completed in a single appointment and the results can last years. Of consideration is that cosmetic bonding absorb stains quicker than natural tooth enamel. Dr. Añonuevo can help you decide if dental bonding is appropriate over veneers or crowns, which are more resistant to stains.

How Bonding Is Performed

During a bonding intervention, Dr. Añonuevo applies a composite resin material to the affected tooth, and carefully sculpts it to cover up some blemishes. Plus dental bonding can improve the shape or size of the tooth. The bonding material is color-matched to the natural tooth enamel for a seamless result. Dr. Añonuevo hardens or “cures” the bonding material with a special light.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a versatile tool in any cosmetic dentist’s kit. These tiny pieces of ceramic are bonded to the surface of imperfect teeth to mask chips, cracks, stains, discoloration and other blemishes. Many cosmetic dentistry patients opt to have a set of veneers placed over the front teeth that are visible in a smile. Though thin, veneers are very strong and durable. With the proper care, they can last many years. Veneers may not be the best choice if you have an off bite or grind your teeth; this will be discussed during your visit.

How Porcelain Veneers Are Placed

The veneer design and placement process typically requires two or more dental visits. During the first visit, Dr. Añonuevo examines the affected tooth or teeth and removes a small bit of tooth structure to create room for the veneer(s). He takes impressions of the teeth and sends them to the dental laboratory that constructs the restorations. Dr. Añonuevo will also note the color of the natural looking veneers, which should be carefully designed to match the surrounding natural teeth. He may place provisional veneers over the affected teeth to protect them until the permanent restorations are ready.

During the second visit, Dr. Añonuevo removes the provisional restorations and places the permanent veneers over the teeth. He checks them for fit and comfort, and ensures the upper and lower teeth bite together properly. Finally, Dr. Añonuevo bonds the veneers over the teeth using a strong dental adhesive. He polishes them so they look luminescent in the mouth.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that protect damaged or decayed teeth. They replace virtually all of the external tooth structure, down to the gum line. Not only do crowns improve the appearance of the teeth, they also strengthen teeth and make them more resilient. They allow compromised teeth to function normally. Traditionally, crowns were rendered in metal materials, but modern crowns can be crafted from porcelain for a beautiful result that looks exactly like a natural tooth.

How Crowns Are Placed

The crown design and placement process typically requires two or more dental visits. During the first visit, Dr. Añonuevo examines the affected tooth and removes decayed tooth structure. He shapes the tooth to prepare it for the crown. Then, Dr. Añonuevo takes an impression of the tooth to send to the dental laboratory that makes the crown. He will also indicate the color of the crown to ensure it matches the surrounding teeth perfectly.

Dr. Añonuevo can attach a temporary crown to the prepared tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being constructed.
Once the permanent crown is ready, the second visit is scheduled. Dr. Añonuevo removes the provisional crown and places the finished crown over the affected tooth. He checks it against the bite and if he is satisfied, bonds it into place.

Crowns are designed to be strong and long-lasting. With the proper care, they can last for many years.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the process of erasing stains caused by eating and drinking certain foods, smoking and the effects of the aging process. Treatment lightens the color of the teeth so they look more attractive while giving our dental patients the confidence to show their smile again. Dr. Añonuevo recommends professional chairside whitening to patients that want the strongest and fastest acting prescription. In-office options are Zoom! and GLO Science, and you can discuss with Dr. Añonuevo the best choice depending on your past experience or tooth sensitivity. Also available are at-home options from Zoom!, GLO Science and Opalescence to enhance or maintain your bright smile.

Teeth Whitening Treatment

Teeth Whitening Treatment Details

During a Zoom! or GLO Science whitening treatment in Charlotte, a concentrated bleaching solution is applied to the teeth and activated with a special light or heat. The active ingredients in the bleaching gel penetrate the tooth enamel and break up stains and discoloration.

The teeth look whiter and brighter almost immediately after treatment and can be maintained six months to two years. Dr. Añonuevo can also provide custom-fitted whitening trays to “touch up” the results of chairside whitening treatment.

Certified Invisalign Provider

Consider Invisalign to get beautiful, straight teeth without traditional metal braces. A series of nearly invisible, removable and comfortable aligners are made with 3D computer imaging customized for every Charlotte dental patient. You can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. The dentist likes it because you can brush and floss without a problem. A complimentary consultation with Dr. Añonuevo can determine if Invisalign is right for you.

How Invisalign Works

You wear a set of custom-made, computer-modeled aligners for about two weeks at a time. You only remove the aligners when you eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner in the series, your teeth will move a little week-by-week in a safe manner until they have straightened to the final position you and Dr. Añonuevo have agreed to. Office visits are scheduled about every four to six weeks to ensure treatment is progressing as planned. Most treatments average nine to 15 months dependent on goals.
